Eat With More Awareness

Good food choices start with understanding what you’re putting into your body.

Nutrition isn’t about following one perfect diet. It’s about becoming more aware of what you eat, how much you eat, and how your everyday choices add up over time.

The basics

Why Nutrition Matters

Food provides the energy and nutrients your body needs to function, grow and stay well.

What you eat regularly can influence your energy levels, weight, fitness, and overall health. That’s why paying attention to your everyday food choices can be an important part of looking after yourself.

Small choices, repeated consistently, can make a meaningful difference.

Before you add it to the basket

Start With the Package

The front of a food package is designed to catch your attention. The nutrition panel is there to help you understand what you’re actually buying.

Before choosing a product, take a moment to check:

01

Serving Size

Understand how much the nutritional information refers to. One package may contain several servings.

02

Energy & Calories

Calories are a measure of energy. Your body’s energy needs vary depending on factors such as age, body size, activity level and other individual circumstances.

Looking at calories can help you understand how much energy you’re getting from a food compared with how much you need.

03

Protein

Protein contributes to the maintenance and growth of body tissues and is an important part of a varied diet.

04

Fibre

Fibre is an important part of a healthy diet and is found naturally in foods such as vegetables, fruits, legumes and wholegrains.

05

Sugars

Check the amount of sugars in the product and consider how it fits into your overall diet.

06

Saturated Fat

Pay attention to saturated fat as part of your overall dietary pattern.

07

Sodium

Check sodium levels, particularly when comparing similar products.

More than one number

Calories Matter — But They Aren’t the Whole Story

Calories tell you about energy, but nutrition is more than a single number.

Two foods can provide a similar amount of energy while offering very different amounts of protein, fibre, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients.

That’s why it can be useful to consider:

  • How much am I eating?
  • What nutrients does it provide?
  • How often do I eat it?
  • How does it fit into my overall diet?

The nutrition information panel

Learn to Read the Nutrition Information Panel

You don’t need to be a nutrition expert to start making better-informed choices.

When comparing similar products, look at the information per 100 g or 100 mL where available. This can make comparisons easier when serving sizes differ.

Also look at the per serving information to understand what you’re actually consuming.

Don’t just look at the headline number. Look at the details.

The per 100 gram column is highlighted as the one to use when comparing products. Look Beyond “Healthy” and “Unhealthy”

Food isn’t always that simple. A product shouldn’t necessarily be judged by one ingredient, one nutrient or one number.

Your overall eating pattern matters. A balanced approach can include a variety of foods, including foods you enjoy, while paying attention to portions and frequency.

The goal is awareness — not perfection.
